Der Film „Didi Contractor – Marrying the Earth to the Building“ zeichnet ein feinfühliges Portrait der amerikanischen Künstlerin und Architektin Didi Contractor (1929–2021), die sich in ihrer Paxis mit der Frage auseinandersetzte, wie Architektur Teil unseres Ökosystems sein kann und konkrete Lösungen in Zeiten des Klimawandels, und der Energiekrise schafft. Didi Contractors Architektur ist ökonomisch, ökologisch und nachhaltig, eine Architektur, die aus der Natur schöpft und zurückgibt, die Landschaft, Haus und Bewohner miteinander vereinen. Die gebürtige Amerikanerin, die ihrem Mann nach Indien folgte und dort zuerst als Künstlerin und Designerin tätig war, setzte sich in ihrem fast 30-jährigen Schaffen als Architektin im Nordwesten Indiens, am Fuße des Himalayas, gegen die am Westen orientierte Modernisierung durch. So baute und gestaltete sie Zeit ihres Lebens mit natürlichen Materialien wie Lehm, Schiefer, Flussstein und Bambus, welche sich in der unmittelbaren Umgebung befanden.
Didi Contractor betrachtete Mutter Erde als unser Zuhause und unseren Garten, welche mit Erde, Wind, Wasser und Feuer im Einklang steht. So studierte sie sorgfältig wie sich Licht, Jahreszeiten, Wetter und Pflanzen zueinander verhalten.
Die Regisseurin Steffi Giaracuni öffnet uns Zuschauern in ihrem poetischen Dokumentarfilm nicht nur die Türen in die tiefgründige, von Respekt erfüllte Philosopie dieser starken, kreativen Frau, sondern auch in ihre Häuser und deren Bewohner und sensibiliert uns hierbei für die globalen Fragen üben den Umgang mit unserem Planeten.

The film “Didi Contractor – Marrying the Earth to the Building” draws a sensitive portrait of the American artist and architect Didi Contractor (1929–2021), who in her paxis dealt with the question of how architecture can be part of our ecosystem and create concrete solutions in times of climate change and energy crisis. Didi Contractor’s architecture is economical, ecological and sustainable, an architecture that draws from nature and gives back, uniting landscape, house and inhabitant. Born in America, she followed her husband to India, where she first worked as an artist and designer. In her almost 30 years of work as an architect in northwest India, at the foot of the Himalayas, she stood up to modernisation oriented towards the West. Throughout her life, she built and designed with natural materials such as clay, slate, river stone and bamboo, which were found in the immediate surroundings.
Didi Contractor considered Mother Earth as our home and garden, which is in harmony with earth, wind, water and fire. So she carefully studied how light, seasons, weather and plants relate to each other.
In her poetic documentary, director Steffi Giaracuni not only opens the doors to the profound, respectful philosophy of this strong, creative woman, but also to her homes and their inhabitants, raising our awareness of the global issues of how we treat our planet.
